Set in the early twentieth century, Benjamin's historical novel follows the friendship and careers of two powerful women in Hollywood: actress Mary Pickford and screenwriter Frances Marion. At a time when women were expected to follow studio policy and keep their opinions to themselves, Pickford and Marion make a series of popular, high-grossing films on their own terms. Reader Farr gives Pickford a younger, clearer voice that fits well with her personality. Marion sounds slightly fuller and more no-nonsense. Farr handles other characters well, particularly the often-pompous studio heads and actors, including Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin. The story develops slowly, opening with the friends as older women, voiced believably by Farr, before flashing back to their beginnings. Not everything goes smoothly in their friendship, and the reader is able to add the appropriate level of annoyance in the well-established characters. Listeners interested in pioneering women and filmmaking in its early days will be drawn into the delightful details. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
